I was lucky enough to see Andrea Gibson perform at the Bowery Poetry Club in New York this week. Gibson is an award-winning poet and activist whose poetry focuses on gender norms, politics, and the struggles queer people face in today’s society. She also works with a group called Vox Feminista whose model is to “comfort the disturbed and disturb the comfortable” on all these issues. I was actually moved to tears when she performed her poems, including this one:

WOW! This is amazing because of Andrea’s presentation and delivery, the way the words flow and it does in fact come across as, at least to me, my 8 year old self in thought.
I’m going to add Andrea Gibson to the CD stack and listen the hell out of her and wish I had come across her earlier.. And then relisten the hell out other excellent spoken word (and occasional song) artists on the mp3 player like of Alix Olsen, Melissa Ferris etc.
She’s extraordinary. Thanks for sharing.
Woah, she’s awesome! I’m in love with her poetry now, thanks for the share!
