In the environment in which I grew up in, girls also had limitations on how to behave. Be nice, be quiet, be obedient, be submissive, accept that your brother is preferred. Wear dresses, act like a lady. Don’t do sports, that’s for boys, go play house. And so forth. I’ll grant you that I’m 40, so maybe experiences are different now.

While both boys and girls are socialized regarding gender from (as you say) birth, girls are encouraged in a wider range of emotional and relational expression than boys prior to adolescence. It’s when puberty hits (Gilligan would argue) that girls experience more stringent limitations on what they can be/do/say because of gender, whereas little boys are (for example) punished for crying or discouraged from being nurturing much earlier.

Anecdotally, I’d say all children are indoctrinated starting at birth and certainly I noticed that I was being treated differently from my little brother before I even hit kindergarten. And it did not make me happy.
