I was listening to the most recent Opinionated podcast yesterday and Samhita, Amanda, and Anne Friedman and they were talking about the "busy trap" article as well -- and how he doesn't really take into account the rhythm of life for free-lancers who have to hustle 24/7 to make ends meet, or who have periods of extreme busyness followed by a couple of months of time off/drought. And they also talk a bit about people who genuinely thrive on doing what they do for pay basically from the moment they wake up until the moment they fall asleep. While not what I want for my life, I thought it was an interesting alternate perspective!

I read the busy-ness piece as well, linked to on Facebook. Like you guys, I deliberately chose a 'day job' that pays well enough to keep me in the manner to which I am accustomed (ie, bills paid comfortably, enough left over that I don't have to scrimp and save or angst over getting a takeaway if I fancy it) but that I can leave behind at the end of the day and not think about. My job isn't my life or my fulfilment, I get that from my horses as I'm a serious (former professional) rider so all my ambition and drive gets pointed in that direction.
I *am* stupid busy this summer, but that's because I'm competing horses for several other people and one of them lives 2.5 hours away, so getting up to prepare him for stuff takes out a weekend to make it worth while, and because my other half lives five hours away and I should see him occasionally, and I like having a social life too! My next free weekend is at the end of September and I am planning a very very idle winter.

I have it all (that I want) - job that pays well and has reasonable prospects, social life, hobbies that fulfil and satisfy me. I never dust though.
